Have you ever been 

A mother?

Yes...the answer may surprise you

as it did me.

But, its been all my life.

Each time

I could create something

Worthwhile out of purely nothing,

When I lost sleep

Caring for a loved one,

When I spent life energy

On someone because they

Needed it more than I did,

When I revelled in a friend's dream

And dared myself to make it come true.

Or when a strange power 

Rose from my gut

To deal with what lay ahead,

When I got smothered

With affection and 

Unabashedly laughed out loud,

When I thought sacrifice is only 

a synonym for kindness,

When the great joy in life could boil down to

Tucking someone to sleep 

or giving them a meal,

When your heart belongs

to what another does,

Yes believe it or not

I have been a mother 

Long before I knew it.
