Like the
other two productions by the Anil Kapoor Film Company – Aisha and
Khoobsoorat – the upcoming Veere Di Wedding, too, is a female
centric film. This also continues the strong run of films driven by
female protagonists seen so far in 2018 like Padmaavat, Hichki and
Pari. But unlike these films, Veere Di Wedding makes no promises
other than being a fun film.
No
one ever said that a fun film can't shine the light on changing
social attitudes, though.
The film
has clearly taken a leaf out of the Sex and the City book. And not
withstanding the now antiquated pop-culture reference point, the film
promises to be a progressive one and not just one about the sexy
shenanigans of four friends. That said, though, the Indian film industry hasn't dared to venture into the territory so far.
And if anyone has seen the video for the song 'Tareefen' from the
movie, they would be aware that it is a pretty different take from
the usual fare, that ends up objectifying women. Even though the glam
quotient is high enough to go down as a memorable party number, with
Badshah doing his rap, this is no item song.
Each of
the women is seen to be in a different place in their lives, as the
promo tells us, but binding them together is their friendship. Now we
have seen multiple bromance movies, with Farhan Akhtar as their
pioneer, but I can't think of any recent films with female
friendships at their base. Aisha, which was the Anil Kapoor Film Company's
first production, came close. But that too, is based on Jane Austen's
classic novel Emma, which is not so much about friendship as it is
about an individual. Given how important friendships tend to be for
women, it is surprising that we haven't seen this kind of a film in
mainstream Indian cinema earlier. To that extent, it seems to be a
fresh story.
We are told that one of
the friends eloped to get married, another is seeing the breakup of
hers and a third is just not ready to take the leap. From the word
go, these are atypical life scenarios for the average Hindi film
heroine, despite the fact that that the portrayals have become more
relaxed, life like and emancipted in the last few years.
All in
all, which is due for release on June 1, looks like it is worth a
watch, than not.
